A blast of frigid air hit Marley hard, throwing rocks of snow and sharp ice at his face—shards that stabbed at him like glass needles. A swirling wind wrapped around him so that no matter which direction he turned, it still met him head-on. Marley held up his arm several times to ward off the stinging crystals, but to no effect: the flying grains nicked his cheeks and eyelids until he cried out.

The ghost leaned forward against the wind and walked blind, dragging his iron sledge behind him. All the while, Brighton’s scream resonated in his memory, or perhaps it lingered in the wind like a long-sustained note, fading so gradually that its vanishing point is never known. Once, Marley thought he still heard the cry, but decided it came from the wind after all.

He tried not to think about it and concentrated instead on walking head-down. After a time, he could move and not think; simply withdraw into the blank, dreamless shelter reserved for him in the recesses of his soul.

Imperceptibly, the wind died. Marley became aware of the change the way sleeping mortals slowly perceive the rising sun. Marley raised his face to the air and looked around. Trees—thick evergreens—flanked him now. They bordered both sides of a narrow, scarlet trail of ghost-moon snow; the trail rose along a hillside. Marley took a deep breath, hoisted a portion of his chain over his shoulder and ascended the grade.
